Classic Black and White Photography

Many of the most powerful, memorable and effective photographs are black and white images. With digital photography though you can no longer take a great black and white photograph... but you can create one using the black and white photography techniques. Students will be challenged to visualize the world in black and white and produce striking portrait, landscape and travel photographs.

In this course, participants use a digital camera to take photos and use computer software photo editing techniques in post processing software to make Classic Black and White photographs. Class includes one off campus photography outing. Photoshop and other software will be used - no prior knowledge necessary.

Materials fee $5 payable to instructor.

Digital Camera - Beginning DSLR and Compact Digitals

This class advances you from Auto Mode to the custom modes of your camera: Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority modes, allowing control of aperture size, time, color, balance, metering choices, and ISO. With these essential tools you can create custom pictures.

We also learn the Rule of Thirds composition technique. Each class focuses on choices for portraits, landscape, selective focusing, and stopping action. You will bring your pictures to class for helpful discussion.A field trip brings all this together so bring camera and manual to each class.

Limited to 12 students to allow one on one help from the instructor.Instructor has presented slide shows of her work on Goddesses in Ancient Art at De Anza College and shows on historical Turkey and Greece at Foothill College.

DSLR Focus on Manual Modes
Get out of auto and control exposure by learning the ins and outs of Manual Exposure.  In this class you will use your camera in hands-on exercises to learn how to properly expose every photograph you make. Manual exposure is easier than you think once you understand Shutter and Aperture modes.  Control over exposure ensures every photo is never too bright or too dark.  Drastically improve your photography by learning to operate the camera manually.

Matting and Framing - Fundamentals

Learn how to mat your artwork for framing. This class is a hands-on basic matting workshop for drawings, watercolors, pen and ink, photographs and other flat art.  Bring your own artwork to class and leave with a matted masterpiece ready for the perfect frame.  Lecture and matting demonstration along with mats (black and white only) and mat cutters available for participants to cut mats for their own works of art.  Explore the fundamentals of Matting and Framing: why we frame, design principles, archival materials and the practicality of getting your artwork on the wall.  Contact instructor for details on art size limits and image preparedness prior to class. NEW Advanced Digital

This class provides more knowledge and practices using the settings for aperture and shutter speed (time) modes. Other topics to be revisited include: depth of field, selective focus, stopping movement, metering choices, white balance and also a bracketing demonstration.

We will visit the world renowned San Jose Rose Garden in it’s May spectacular full-bloom with countless rose species, landscaped to perfection around the water fountain (practice water flow blending and particularization), along with the fascinating grounds and landscaping at the nearby Rosicrucian Museum.

A second field trip location TBA.

Photography - Hot Summer Nights

Get out and photograph on those Hot Summer Nights. After dark is an awesome experience with today’s Digital SLR cameras. This course focuses on the camera settings for long exposures in twilight light, blue light and evening light.

Class includes one off-site photography adventure. On campus hands-on classes explore low light, existing light and camera settings for photographing fireworks. Bring your camera, manual(s), tripod (if you have one), imagination and questions to class for hands-on low light and no light photography experience.

Materials Fee $5 payable 1st day of class.

Portrait Photography - Evening Light

You don’t need to own a studio to take good people pictures. Compose, pose and capture great images of people by learning the art of portrait photography. This class focuses on artificial and natural lighting used to make portraits in the golden hour, twilight, and ambient light.

Through lecture and hands on exercises participants explore the reflecting light, measuring light, balancing light,white balance in the golden light, and working with subjects for making portraits. Bring your camera,charged batteries, and a tripod if you have one to class.

Each class includes in-class and home assignments and tips for improving photo composition and lighting. Make beautiful pictures of the beautiful people in your life.
